The fluid mechanics laboratory of mechanical engineering department offers a variety of experiments for undergraduate students. What follows is a brief description of each available experiment.

Velocity Measurement Using Pitot Tube

Objectives:

  • Velocity measurement in different cross sectional positions of a channel
  • Finding the velocity profile and the volumetric flow rate

Fluids Statics

Objectives:

  • Observation of stagnant fluid behavior
  • Studying the Pascal law and calibrating a Burdon gauge

Friction Head Loss

Objectives:

  • Experimental Verification of different relations about frictional head loss in a pipe with different roughness
  • Finding the friction factor in a pipe

Friction Head Loss in the Pipe Connections

Objectives:

  • Determining the head loss in the bend pipes and elbows
  • Verifying the relation between the flow velocity and head loss

Friction Head Loss in the Valves

Objectives:

  • Determination of head loss in different valves
  • Verification of  the relation between flow velocity and head loss

Hydraulic Jump

Objectives:

  • Investigating the variation of depth and head loss in a rectangular channel

Wind Tunnel (1)

Objectives:

  • Finding the velocity profile along the cross section of a wind tunnel for different air speeds
  • Measurement of pressure distribution on a circular cylinder

Wind Tunnel (2)

 Objective:

  • Measurement of drag coefficient of different shapes in the wind tunnel for different air speeds

Centrifugal Pump

Objectives:

  • Evaluation of the performance of a centrifugal pump at constant and variable speeds
  • Measurement of the pump head
  • Drawing the characteristics curve of the pump and finding the optimum point of the performance
